What experience has taught me about singers
After working with hundreds of singers— from beginners to professionals— I’ve noticed that lasting progress isnt’ about talent alone. It’s about consistency habits, thoughtful training, and learning to trust your own voice.
Confidence usually follows preparation, not the other way around.
The singers who make the most progress are rarely the most talented. They're the most consistent.
Most vocal breakthroughs don't happen overnight. They happen through small adjustments repeated over time.
Auditions rarely reveal what a singer can do at their best. They reveal what a singer can do reliably.
Great singing is not about perfection. It's about communication, skill, and trust in your technique.
These observations shape every lesson I teach, and every singer I mentor.
What Students Appreciate Most
Serious training delivered with warmth, encouragement, and humor
Practical tools that make complex vocal concepts easy to understand and apply
Expertise in building confidence, consistency, and trust in the voice
Support for the whole artist—not just the notes on the page
A welcoming studio community where singers can grow, connect, and belong
Most people can learn to sing. My job is to help you discover what your voice is capable of.
Serious Training. Human Approach.
Hi, I’m Deborah.
I'm a vocal coach, performer, and educator who helps singers build reliable technique, confident artistry, and sustainable careers.
My students have gone on to perform on Broadway, at the Metropolitan Opera, on American Idol and The Voice, in top college and conservatory programs, and on stages in their own communities.
Whether you're preparing for auditions, expanding your range, transitioning styles, or returning to serious vocal study, my focus is helping you do your best work.
6 Things to Know About Working With Me
1. Most people can learn to sing.
You don't have to be born with a "gift." My job is to help you build a voice that feels stronger, freer, and more reliable. Whether you're preparing for auditions, performances, recordings, or simply singing for the joy of it, we'll work together to help you trust your voice.
2. Serious training. Human approach.
I hold high standards, but I don't believe in fear, shame, or intimidation. My students work hard, laugh often, and make real progress. You can expect honest feedback, practical tools, and a teacher who genuinely wants you to succeed.
3. I specialize in contemporary styles.
Many of my students come from classical, choral, or traditional musical theatre backgrounds and want to explore contemporary musical theatre, pop, rock, belt, mix, or commercial styles. Together, we'll build the skills and confidence to sing the music you love while maintaining vocal health.
4. You'll receive expert guidance grounded in current voice science.
As a faculty member at the Eastman School of Music and a lifelong student of voice, I stay current with the latest research and teaching approaches. My goal is to translate complex vocal concepts into practical, useful tools that work in the real world.
5. I've lived many musical lives.
My career has taken me from musical theatre to opera, from Rochester to Italy, from performer to teacher and mentor. Because of that journey, I understand that artists grow, change, and reinvent themselves. I help singers navigate those transitions with confidence.
6. You belong here.
Conquest Voice Studio is a welcoming, affirming community for singers of many ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. Whether you're preparing for professional auditions, returning to singing after years away, or taking your very first lesson, you'll be met with respect, encouragement, and genuine support.
(Also, for the record: I love hiking, rockabilly music, painting, competitive powerlifting, houseplants, travel, museums, and chocolate cake—not necessarily in that order.)
Teaching Philosophy
Singing is alive — always shifting, always growing — and so are you. Singing is alive—always shifting, always growing—and so are you.
At Conquest Voice Studio, I help singers build the strength, flexibility, and artistry to meet the demands of today's industry with confidence. My work is rooted in current voice science, functional pedagogy, and more than 20 years of teaching and performing experience.
I specialize in helping singers expand beyond a classical or choral foundation into contemporary styles with freedom, authenticity, and healthy technique. Together, we develop new vocal colors, greater flexibility, and the skills needed to communicate honestly through song.
My teaching is also informed by athletic training principles. Lasting vocal growth comes from consistent practice, efficient technique, strategic rest, and patience—not quick fixes. My goal is to help you build a voice that is reliable, expressive, and sustainable.
Most importantly, this is a studio where your voice is valued, your artistry is respected, and your growth is supported. Whether you're preparing for auditions, performances, or your next creative leap, you'll gain the tools and confidence to do your best work.
Ready to dive in? Let’s bring your voice — and your story — fully to life.
"Deborah Conquest excels in teaching the art of acting through song.
After just one year of study, my ability to audition improved dramatically.
I now approach auditions with confidence, a strong repertoire, and the technical foundation needed for both classic and contemporary musical theatre."
